Over the weekend, the Democratic Republic of Congo observed a national day of remembrance for what it terms the “Genocost” — a word used to describe the mass loss of life associated with the long-standing conflict over the country's natural resources.

During the commemoration, President Félix Tshisekedi urged both houses of parliament to move swiftly toward adopting an official resolution recognizing the atrocities committed in eastern Congo as acts of genocide.

“I solemnly call on both chambers of parliament to urgently consider the adoption of a resolution that formally acknowledges the genocide carried out on our soil,” Tshisekedi declared on Saturday.

He argued that the widespread killing of civilians in the eastern provinces meets the definition of genocide under the 1948 United Nations Convention. The president also pledged to carry this campaign to the international stage, seeking broader global recognition.

The annual Genocost remembrance is held every August 2nd and was first established three years ago. This year’s event included the unveiling of a new memorial near the National Museum in Kinshasa, symbolizing the nation’s ongoing effort to honor victims and push for justice.
