A tragic incident occurred this weekend in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo at the Byambwe health center, located near Butembo in North Kivu. Reports confirm that 17 people were brutally killed, including 11 young mothers who were hospitalized in the maternity ward. Some victims were found in their hospital beds with fatal wounds, an attack marked by extreme cruelty.

This act of violence has sparked widespread outrage both in the DRC and internationally.Among the voices expressing deep concern, Dr. Denis Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize laureate and renowned advocate for survivors of conflict-related violence, strongly condemned the attack. He emphasized that targeting women who have just given life represents one of the most severe and destructive forms of violence a community can endure.
Human rights organizations and civil society groups are calling for:
an immediate and transparent investigation,
strengthened protection measures for civilians in conflict-affected areas,
and accountability for those responsible for this crime.
Espoir Life Foundation shares the concern raised by many and highlights the ongoing humanitarian challenges faced by communities in eastern Congo. Our aim is to keep the public informed and to advocate for peace, protection, and dignity for all.
